DESCRIPTION: APW - Waltham, Grade 16-A, military "Master Navigation Watch," 22J, 16S, chrome-plated base metal OF original case with contract markings to rear, black metal GCT (Greenwich Civil Time) 24-hour dial, SW-hack-set with sweep-seconds, fully capped lever escapement, mono-metallic balance with "Conel" hairspring, striped pattern nickel damascene, s#31789040. Comes with a wooden Waltham Watch Co. signed Bu. Aero U.S. Navy "Aircraft Navigational Watch Box." A strong example of this World War II military watch, Waltham's AN 5740 "Master Navigation Watch" had a total production of only 5,000 made making it significantly less common than its military counterparts from Hamilton (greater than 140,000 made) and Elgin (20,000 made). From the Estate of Joel Henry Beecher, who loved Walthams.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, excellent-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, some oxide to hub of smaller winding wheel; nearly flawless dial has one very small spot at hour 20; excellent hands; case shows little wear, scattered fine scratches and profuse micro-fine scratches to rear, no dents or dings, strong contract marking detail and original circular brushed finish remains intact; tight bow, crown shows light wear; glass crystal with finish imperfection that makes a diagonal line across left side; wooden box has been relacquered, otherwise excellent external condition overall, interior of box with modern era foam and felt padding inserts added.
ESTIMATE: $300 - $600
